As a native Angeleno, the Rose Parade has been a particular fixture all my life. I’ve seen it in-person and on tv. I’ve even volunteered to help with creating floats too. For many, there are larger consequences to its absence, but here’s a poem to its absence and here’s hope to see it return soon. -cct

when there is no parade

it may be easier to think of
how rose petals fall
when there is no parade
to showcase them all
but absent of wonder
and filled with the quiet
is perhaps a story
centered on a rose pristine
held beneath the glass
where magic churns
and love draws us closer
in ways greater than being seen

a renewed breath

I did not know I had tucked
my heart into such a small space
until this Saturday morning news
when I felt it grow beyond
the need for scaffolding
when I felt its beat quicken
with a chorus and a song
sung by voices all over the land
echoing across the seas

what a renewed breath in a new morning
where hope is a part of oxygen again

There’s a lot of work ahead, but today is a celebration to a better direction for us all. -cct
